HOSPITALITY DESIGN

VIKING INSPIRED BREW PUB

Skål Craft Brewery aims to offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience - feasting as the Vikings did. I gathered inspiration from the television series Vikings. The series shows that celebratory feasting, especially beer, was a significant part of their lives. Therefore, Skål Craft Brewery offers an experience where family, friends, and 4-legged friends can celebrate life.

The goal of the brewery's interior was not to create a literal scene of the spaces the Vikings lived in but rather a modern figurative depiction of it. The focus of the interior was materials connecting to nature and creating a cosy atmosphere. Vikings were extremely grounded and connected to nature. The gods they believed in were worshipped and respected through nature. Therefore, materials like dark-engineered wood, grey-engineered quartz, and marble-like ceramic tiles were used.

The retained trees connect to the woods and nature scene where the Vikings stayed. This was a great source of timber for their ships. The 3D blue ceramic tiles links to the oceans the Vikings scoured to discover other lands. This also creates rhythm and movement, simulating ocean waves breaking. Lastly, the Vikings made their weapons out of iron/steel. Therefore black stainless steel metal sheeting was used as covers on the Pergola to link to the ironmongery of the Vikings.

Other elements to further emphasise the theme are the circular entrance which connects to the shields Vikings used as armour, and the bulkhead over the bar has a similar pattern to what was painted on their wooden shields. I used a welcoming fire pit on the outdoor porch (the centre point of any Viking feast) and Scandinavian furniture to fit into the Nordic theme.

All these elements successfully create a warm, inviting space to welcome guests to enjoy an authentic Viking feast.
