HEALING DESIGN

SKIN CARE CLINIC

25   /   10   /   2022

The Skin Aesthetic Clinic was designed to heal patients through design. This was done using colour psychology and natural materials based on case studies. The colour scheme has a neutral tone with hints of pink. The pink tones will heal and soothe the patient. This lighthearted colour can also stimulate happiness. The materials used are primarily in natural form, which connects the patients to nature and is found to invoke comfort. These raw materials include linen, engineered wood and engineered quartz. Passive design strategies were also incorporated into the space, for example, using natural light, biophilia and double-glazed laminated glass to control thermal comfort. Lastly, organic curvilinear forms were used, which connect to nature. This also creates a logical spatial flow.

The dermatologist suite consists of the consulting room, the examination room and the procedure room. The consulting room has a desk with two visitor's chairs. The use of natural materials, the big open windows, and biophilia connect the patient to nature. This is essential as a clinic can be a scary place to some. Therefore comfort is crucial. Each procedure room has a bulkhead with concealed lighting, which can be perceived as a skylight. This creates softer lighting, which creates an ambient feeling in the examination room. The medical sundries store is adjacent to the dermatologist suite, which allows easy access to medical supplies.

The skin aesthetic clinic was challenged to keep the space clinical with an aesthetical look. The clinical element was achieved using easily cleanable and light materials which make a room feel clean. The aesthetic part was achieved with the colour palette, the style of the space, the materials and the spatial layout of the space. The goal was the same for the different treatment rooms - to create a space where the patients could feel relaxed while undergoing their specific treatments. By incorporating curvilinear shapes, locally sourced natural materials, locally sourced furniture and natural and ambient lighting, the space is not only a healing space but also a 5-star rated green design.
